Work flow guide
This is a sort fo work flow guide that I give to my students to use to help them get started with their characters. Probably not very useful to you pros out there, but it might be valuable to the absolute beginners. I'd like to make it into a real tutorial when I get some extra time.
Enjoy!

This is a great example of what beginners should be doing.
I like the form by the way, now I'm wondering what the key thoughts behind that form are.

Well, my goal was to teach my students to model the overall form first and then work in the details. So often new modelers get hung up on trying to work in the detail all at once and they end up frustrated. I was just trying to give a guide to help them along in the right direction. Unfortunately, it's not really much a tutorial (step by step) just a peek at how I start modeling. I myself feel like I still have a lot to learn. This site is just what the doctor ordered.
Anyway, even if I just help one person with this, I can feel like i gave back to a community that has taught me so much.

Hey maybe others of you would like to post similar examples of modeling work flows in this thread. Not necessarily step by step tutorials (although those are always good), but just some insight on how you start your modeling projects. Kind of like those animated gifs by Bay Raitt, Martin Kroll, and other top notch modelers except not animated.
I really think this thread could turn into something beneficial to beginners that might make it easier for them to apply certain techniques to their own work flows without them just copying something step by step.
Does that make sense?

Awesome thanks for posting this Locutus. I was planing on posting something similar myself. I think the tutorial forum is a great place for people to post mini tutorials like this. And I encourage other to do the same.

What I had in mind was to have 3 special sections.. it's like a Ladder or a Temple. BUT I'm not sure if it's a good idea...
-----3D Class------
--Forms
--Topology
--Detailing/Tweaking
--WIP - For Students
Beginners who visit this site should enter the "Forms" Department and there they can study forms and research on it. This allows them to be free and not be pressured to do anything big. After all, that's the reason why they hang out in the "Forms" department. When they are ready they can move to the Topology department where they can research on Topology.. This allows them to stay focus and learn faster. People can gather and do researches like Topology, Detailing.
Sort of like life drawing classes but for 3D sub-d modelers!
This eliminates the need to have "WIP - for absolute beginner" department and give us "WIP - For Students".
Just something I had in mind.

Ideas like that could really do alot for the community and the industry. Also, it makes joining the community less intimidating for newcomers who often get their posted work harshly criticized without suggestions on how to improve. With this site being non- application specific, the focus can be on technique and not "what's the best 3D modeler out there?" or "which is better app A or app B?". Sort of like Spiraloid, but less rigid and more educational.

The site will evolve and be shaped by the discussions taking place within the forums. I am more than happy to structure a modeling section in this way but we need to ensure there is a structured approach to setting it up and that there is sufficient interested parties to run it (Capable moderators and modelers). The site officially launches Monday and the response already seems to indicate that there was a need for it. The structure you are presenting here does sound feasible to me but I would like to hear more about its administration.
Very cool example of polygon modeling workflow. I would love to see more and more of these and for non organic models as well. Excellent thread guys.
